current events 3 - Electrical Engineer Can Feel Magnetic Fields Through Magnets Implanted in His Fingertips

       This article is about an electric engineer. Since he has magnets implanted on his fingers, he is able to feel magnetic fields. This shocking news was told recently. The engineer is very happy with the magnets implanted on his fingers. He says that it gives him the sixth sense. He cannot pick up furious objects that are much heavier than a staple. If he has an object sticking to his fingers for a long time, then they will pinch the blood flow to the area and can cause the skin to die, resulting to take the magnets off. He says that the main reason he wanted this new "super power" was because of his profession. With this new "super power", he would be able to work well with power supply or a motor that isn't functioning well.

     I feel that it is very creepy to be able to feel the magnetic fields through your fingers. I wonder how it feels... it is like another sense. Also, I think wit would be pretty annoying to have magnetic objects sticking to you when ever you go near them. However, I think that the electric engineer did make a good choice because this new "super power" will definitely help him in his profession. It will make work so much more easier. Overall, I feel that if anyone wants to be an electric engineer, then they should get magnets implanted on their fingers just like this guy did.

Current Events 2: The First Drug Made by Genetically Modified Plants is Approved for Human Use by the FDA

       This article is about U.S. Federal Drug Administration, who did something very surprising  and shocking. For the first time, they approved a drug for humans that was produced in a genetically engineered plant cell. This can lead to a range of biologic drugs that are generated in plant cells and then transferred to human patients. Also, this event took place at Israeli. In addition, engineers from this place have found a treatment for the disorder, Gaucher disease. This disease occurs when a person lacks a specific enzyme. The engineers figured out how to grow this specific enzyme in carrot cells by inserting a specific gene into them that encodes for this human enzyme. In trials, people who received this "bio-pharmed" version of the enzyme showed improvement compared to those who were given another treatment for Gaucher disease. As a result, the FDA decided to let humans use these biologic drugs.

        I feel very happy that the engineers at Israeli discovered this and that the FDA decided to let us use those type of drugs. People all around the globe suffer from severe diseases such as Gaucher disease. If people with these diseases use the drugs that the FDA let us use, then they will at least feel a little better. " Something is better than nothing", is a famous quote that applies in this case. Also, when the engineers insert a specific gene into carrots that encodes for the human enzyme (people with Gaucher disease lack), they will be motivated to eat vegetables. This will not only make the person feel better, but they will also get a fair amount of vitamins and nutrients from the vegetables. Overall, I hope scientists discover more ways to cure the deadly diseases that people all over the world suffer from.

Scientists Use Stem Cells to Generate Human Eggs in the lab!!!!

         This story is about researchers at a General Hospital, in Massachusetts, who claim they have separated stem cells from human ovaries and used them to generate egg cells. The researchers developed healthy human egg cells, using the help of Japanese women who donated reproductive stem cells. From these stem cells, the researchers were able to generate immature egg cells that showed the properties of human eggs. Then, the team placed the stem cells into human ovarian tissue and placed that into mice. After two weeks, these cells generated the proper ovarian structures for producing eggs, as well as egg cells that appeared healthy and ready for fertilization. (DATE OF EVENT IS UNKNOWN) Scientist were trying to prove that it does not matter now if "The conventional line of thinking says that woman can produce only a finite number of egg cells over their lifetimes" (Dillow) Due to this new study, people will not have to think about that thought in their mind.

             In addition, I feel very happy about this topic because couples can have children through this new study, new babies will come to our world, and this means that someday our world will have new infertility treatments. This study can help couples massively because some women may not be able to have a baby due to health issues/problems. Also, new babies coming to our world is a good thing, because the population will grow, replacing the ones who die. Next, having new infertility treatments will be beneficial to couples because this study may be more helpful, efficient, and less expensive than the other infertility treatments. To sum up, I feel very happy about this topic because the new study can be very beneficial to people like us, and the world.

States Of Matter Lab Report

          In class, a series of experiments based on the states of matter was conducted. First, we did an experiment where we had to observe a candle and list its physical properties before and after it was lit and its chemical properties. When the candle was lit, I noticed that the wax was starting to melt, which is a physical change. This was a physical change because the substance did not turn into another substance. A chemical change that I saw in this lab was that the candle was burning. As a result, it was causing smoke to form, which is a new substance. After the lab was done, I learned that in order to cause a chemical change, you have to do something to it. For example, imagine a piece of wood that is not on fire. Can anyone ever name a chemical change? No, because you have to do something to it like burning or causing it to explode so it will turn into a new substance. The next experiment are class did was where we had to mix vinegar and baking soda to create a colorless, odorless gas called carbon dioxide  and pour it over a lit candle. When my group was mixing the vinegar and a small amount of baking soda, we saw that we were forming a chemical change because the liquid had turned into a new substance. When we tilted the glass over the candle flame as if we were pouring something on the flame, the flame went out in a second. This happened due to the lack of oxygen, and as a result, the flame went out. Another experiment we did was where we had to rip a small marshmallow, determine the type of change we just did, and then eat it and describe its taste. After that, we had to take a large marshmallow, place it on a skewer, hold it over the Bunsen burner until it burns, eat the blackened part of the substance, and describe its taste. When the small marshmallow was ripped, it was considered as a physical change because the substance did not change into another form. Also, when the ripped pieces of the small marshmallow were tasted, it was described as sweet, soft, sugary, and melting. In addition, when the blackened part of the big marshmallow was eaten, it tasted burned, and disgusting. When the big marshmallow was getting burned, we were causing a chemical change because the marshmallow was turning into a new substance, which was burned sugar. Furthermore, the marshmallows were solids, which is one of the three states of matter, because it had a definite shape and volume. Last but not least, are class did another experiment where we had to observe changes in matter. We were given four sugar cubes, and first we had to describe its physical properties like its size, shape, color, etc. After that, we had to take two of the sugar cubes and use a mortar and a pestle to crush them into a powder which resulted, a physical change because it was the same substance as before. The substance still had the same taste, volume, and color. Next, we had to take the crushed sugar and put it into a glass of water and stir it with a spoon. When we looked carefully at the liquid, we noticed that the sugar was not visible because it dissolved, which is a chemical change. To check if the sugar was still present, we took a taste of the water. It tastes very sweet, so we knew that the sugar was still there. If one could not taste the water, then one possible way to prove that the sugar is still present is by evaporating the water. The next step we had to do was take the left over two sugar cubes and place them into a test tube. Then, we had to heat the test tube over the Bunsen burner until the sugar burned. As it was burning, we realized that the sugar was turning into a dark black substance. This change was a chemical change, and there was a light yellow substance around the black substance in the test tube. After this experiment, I learned the difference between a chemical change and a physical change. Furthermore, all this information that I learned from the experiments can be applied to the future as well. For example, a puddle drying out is evaporation because it is a liquid changing to gas only at the surface. Also, when one is cutting vegetables, they are causing a physical change. In conclusion, I learned a bunch of new information from these experiments and they can be applied to my daily life, too.  

Separating Mixtures

Items in CUP:

Sand

Two tooth picks

A plastic fly

Salt (mixed with sand)

Water

Procedures:

1)      Use the funnel to pour the liquid from cup into the graduated cylinder (39 ml).

2)      Take out the sand from cup using the magnet.

3)      Take some water out of the graduated cylinder using a pipette and put the rest of the water in a beaker on to the heater for 10 minutes (3/4 water).

4)      Put the rest of the items in cup into the funnel to examine.

5)      Use magnet to see if the contents in funnel are magnetic (In funnel).

6)      Put the contents in the funnel back into cup.

7)      Pour out water in the graduated cylinder into the sink.

8)      Scoop the sand off magnet into cup using the scooper.

9)      Clean out the graduated cylinder and dry it using paper towels.

10)  Wash the funnel thoroughly and dry it using paper towels.

11)   Wash the scooper until it is shiny and dry it using paper towels.

12)    Pour out heated water (using tongs) into sink and wash the beaker and dry the beaker using paper towels.
