The purpose of the lab was to see what the stomach needs when it digests proteins.
We put 3 cubes of egg whites in each test tube
test tube A - pepsin
test tube B - pepsin and water
Test tube C - hydrochloric acid
test tube D - hydrochloric acid and pepsin
Day 2
Egg white Appearances:
Test tube A- It was white, and the pepsin just stayed still around the egg whites. (same as Day 1)
Test tube B - It was white, and there were bubbles forming on the top and the egg whites just stayed at the bottom. Overall, it looked very gooey. (same as Day 1)
Test tube C - The egg whites were still in the clear hydrochloric acid and there were little bubbles on the egg whites. (same as Day 1)
Test tube D - Looked very thick and white and gooey. (Different from Day 1)
Then, we dipped one stirrer into each test tube and dropped the liquid on the blue litmus paper just like Day 1.
Litmus Color:
test tube A - clear. (same as Day 1)
test tube B - clear, spread out very quickly. (same as Day 1)
test tube C - pink. (same as Day 1)
test tube D - white, sticky, gooey, bubbly. (same as Day 1)
In conclusion, I noticed that the test tube with pepsin and hydrochloric acid was the best with digesting the egg whites. I learned that the chemical digestion of protien in food is a slow reaction. The most important fact I learned was that without enzymes and acid, are digestive system will never function properly.
